Overview
ThischapterprovidesadefinitionofaGoogleSearchAppliancereleaseandprovidesinformationusefulfor
understandingthecontentandstructureofGSAreleases.
WhatisaGSArelease?
TheGoogleSearchAppliancehastwomajorcomponentsthataresubjecttochange:softwareand
hardware.EachnewreleaseoftheGSAreferstoanewsoftwareupdatethatGooglehasreleasedandhas
beenmadeavailabletoallcustomers.
GSAhardwareupdatesareperformedindependentlyfromsoftwareupdates,andareonlypossiblethrougha
licenserenewal.ForanoverviewofGSAhardwaremodels,referto“DeterminingtheModelofYourSearch
Appliance”intheAppendixofthishandbook.
ThischapterdiscussesGSAsoftwareupdatesandhowtofindinformationregardingeachrelease.Hardware
updatesarediscussedseparatelyinChapter3,“MigrationPlanning.”
TypesofGSAreleases
TherearetwotypesofGSAsoftwarereleases:
● Versionupgradereleases
● Patchreleases
Versionupgradereleases
EachversionupgradereleaseoftheGSAaddsnewfeaturesandfunctionalitytotheGSA.Forexample,
version6.14introducedFlexibleAuthorizationandversion7.0introducedDocumentPreviews.
Versionupgradereleasesaresignifiedbyachangetotheversionnumber,andaretypicallyreferredtoby
thefirsttwovaluesofthemajorversionnumber,asshowninthefollowingexamples:
● v6.14
● v7.0
Inversionnumbers,thenumbersafterthepointarealwaysevennumbersandareincremental,forexample,
v6.12,v6.14,v7.0.
WhenareleasecontainssignificantchangestoexistingGSAfunctionalityoralargenumberofnew
features,theintegercomponentoftheversionnumberisincremented.Forexample,themovefromv6.14to
v7.0introducedalargenumberofnewfeaturestotheGSA.
